7 December 1941. It is “a date that will live in infamy.” It is the date of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. 353 Japanese planes rained down on the unsuspecting Americans at Pearl Harbor. On that infamous date, 2,390 Americans lost their lives, another 1,282 wounded. The attack also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer, while destroying 188 U.S. aircraft.
The following day, 8 December 1941, the United States officially declared war on Japan. And within three days, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S., an act reciprocated by the U.S. the same day.
The United States of America had officially entered World War II.
