This configuration allows the lifting load to become a compression force and moves tensile forces into the slings. Ultimately, it makes the load much easier to move. It’s a very efficient system that allows heavy cargo to be moved more quickly and safely.

In custom cases, the load spreader works a little differently but operates to achieve the same function. In a custom case, you’ll see a flat plate and stiffening ribs, which work to resist any bending. For secure transportation, the load spreader is attached to either the floor or walls of the case or even a combination of the two. This configuration helps reduce the stress that heavy cargo could have on the plastic and other materials of the case, even very strong materials. This extra bit of security is usually only necessary for dense materials.

Here’s some of the science behind why load spreaders are so effective at spreading out the weight of heavy cargo. High-density payloads, especially in transit situations, need the same amount of protection as lighter cargo. An insufficient system will result in a deformed or even totally broken case. Therefore, the pressure needs to be spread out over a larger surface area to decrease the number of pounds per square inch or psi. To simplify this idea, think about a large man wearing a pair of boots and a smaller lady wearing a pair of heels. Although she is smaller, the psi on the smaller heels is much greater than that of the larger man in the boots.
