Color 101
Custom cases, especially those containing sensitive electronic or medical equipment, should never be left in the sun for long periods of time. While some custom cases are suitable for using active cooling like air conditioning, many aren’t due to the excessive weight and cost. The best way to help keep your custom case cooler in the heat of the sun is with color.
Sun 101
Sunlight is different throughout the globe in terms of what impact it can have on your custom cases. It is most potent near the equator and weakest near the poles. Even if you only travel throughout the United States, your custom case will face a wide variety of heat loads as you make your way through the country. The sun above also isn’t the only heat-related threat. Sunlight and heat are easily reflected off of outdoor surfaces or absorbed by certain colors, raising the temperature and increasing the likelihood your custom case will need extra protection.
What Colors Will Work?
While you might assume that all darker colors are out since darker colors seem to absorb more heat, that isn’t necessarily the case. After many scientific studies, they determined that the ultraviolet rays of the sun have a harder time penetrating the colors blue and red than “lighter” colors like yellow. The custom cases that have the deepest or most intense colors typically offer better UV absorption.
