The Difference Between Injection and Roto Molding

custom cases

Custom cases made with both injection molding and roto molding will ensure that your property will reach its intended destination in perfect condition.

There is more than one way that professionals create custom cases. The techniques of these processes fulfill specific requirements. Whether you need to transport sensitive medical equipment or expensive military gear, these cases ensure that your property will reach its intended destination in perfect condition. For more insight into these different processes, read on to understand the differences between injection and roto molding.

Injection

The two characteristics that describe the injection process are excellent strength and light weight. The process includes using a standard mold for each particular case size. Injection offers the ability to create even corners, single walls, and watertight closures. The plastics used in this process are usually a combination of homo- and co-polymers, which makes the cases strong yet able to maintain a light weight. You’ll find that most injection cases come with plastic catches, air valves, and gaskets.

Roto Molding

To start, the first notable difference between injection and roto molding is that roto molded cases have a double-wall construction. This makes the cases heavier than injection molded cases. The double walls of roto molded cases make them more rigid and able to withstand the shock of accidental drops and other hazards, especially in the corners of custom cases. Roto molding is short for rotational molding, which describes the process of rotating the mold for even distribution. The differences in the construction of each case depend on the heat, speed, and cooling of each molding process. Most roto molded cases come with metal twist catches, which are optional.

Making Your Choice

When deciding whether injection or roto molding is the best process for your custom case needs, the first thing you should know is that roto molding takes much longer than injection and is better for orders of low quantities. The delivery time for injection cases is usually around a day or two. Roto molding, on the other hand, is the better process for large custom cases, which can reach over 10 feet long and provide additional strength.
