Expanded polystyrene – very useful for the needs of some custom cases.

In order to understand what expanded polystyrene and its role in custom cases is, you must first understand exactly what polystyrene is and how it functions. In order to learn more and make the most informed and best possible decisions when it comes to your custom case needs, read on.

What Is Polystyrene?

Polystyrene has diverse uses, making our lives easier, safer, and more convenient in a number of ways through all of its various applications. These include a wide range of applications from thermal insulation for construction purposes to cushion for both industrial and commercial packaging.

The Two Common Types of Polystyrene Foam

There are two types of this material which are used the most regularly. These include extruded polystyrene, or as it commonly known to be called: Styrofoam, and expanded polystyrene. The majority of foodservice applications, including egg cartons, meat trays, and foam trays and plates are made of extruded polystyrene. On the other hand, the common coffee cup and almost all industrial packaging is made from expanded polystyrene. Expanded polystyrene is used to package TVs, computers, stereos, delicate electronic equipment, as well as other frail industrial and consumer products. Both types of polystyrene are utilized in thermal insulation across commercial, industrial, and residential construction.

What Is Expanded Polystyrene?

Expanded polystyrene is a closed-cell, thermoplastic, rigid-foam, lightweight plastic. It has a number of strengths such as having a low thermal conductivity, high compressive, strength, and effective shock absorption. This gives it a wide range of uses.

Does Expanded Polystyrene Contain Certain Chemical Compounds Which Negatively Affect The Ozone Layer?

Expanded polystyrene products are manufactured without CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons. They have never been manufactured with them. The expansion agent used to create this material is pentane. CFCs refer to a family of chemical compounds which are generally used in freezers, refrigerators, and air conditioning units. They are also used in the high tech industry as industrial cleansing solvents.
