Polyurethane foam is a material we use as inserts for our custom cases here at PSI, and it is a wonderful material! It can be found almost any place you can think of, from car seats to mattresses and even shoes. Without it, modern life would be less comfortable. Have you ever wondered how this material was formulated? Today we’re going to take a look at the timeline of the polyurethane foam revolution.
Flexible Foam is Born
Polyurethane was first invented in Germany as early as 1937, but the history of flexible foam really starts in 1954. Commercial production in Europe began in that year, with the United States following soon afterward. Polyurethane foam was adopted quickly in the production of a wide range of products. It was the material chosen for furniture upholstery and car seats, and quickly gained a market share in the production of mattresses. Over the years, companies have found more new ways to use polyurethane foam in products such as kitchen sponges, filters, sound insulation, and in packaging as foam inserts.
Why is Polyurethane Foam so Widely Used?
Polyurethane foam is used widely because it is lightweight, customizable, durable, and cost effective. The foam has developed over time with properties to serve an almost endless range of applications. And it is very durable – polyurethane foam retains its properties so well that products made with it can last for many years. Also, the foam is very environmentally friendly. Since it is made mostly of air, polyurethane foam is extremely lightweight and thus can cut the emissions of pollutants in shipping and other transport applications.
Polyurethane Foam and the Future
Though it has been around for over 60 years, polyurethane foam production continues to grow as companies find more ways to make use of this wonder material. Therefore the market should continue to retain its dominant market share in the future.
