Today, on this most solemn day, we want to wish all veterans a happy Veterans Day. This is a day to honor and celebrate all of those who served in our armed forces. Today we’re going to take a look at the history of Veterans Day.
November 11th, 1918
Veterans Day used to be known as Armistice Day and is actually still referred to by this title in the rest of the world. This date is significant because a cease-fire was implemented on this day which would lead to the end of hostilities of World War I, or what was known at the time as “The Great War”. The armistice went into effect “on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”. The Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended the Great War, was signed on June 28th, 1919. In that subsequent November, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed 11/11 to be the first commemoration of Armistice Day, saying “to us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory”. Congress officially recognized Armistice Day with a resolution on June 4, 1926.
From Armistice Day to Veterans Day
An act of Congress made Armistice Day a legal holiday in 1938 and was initially a day to honor veterans of World War I. However, the onset of World War II led to the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen in U.S. history. After American forces fought in Korea, Congress amended the Act of 1938 to change the word “Armistice” to “Veterans” so that all veterans of past wars could be honored on November 11th. Veterans Day has been celebrated on this day ever since, save for a brief period in the 1970s. It is a day to celebrate and honor America’s veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice.
