How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood? Today we are answering a similar question: how tall could your rack mount case be if your rack mount case could be tall? Okay, maybe we’re pushing it here, but here are some of the requirements to keep in mind while deciding how tall your rack mount case should be.
Why Are Rack Mount Cases Built So Tall Anyways?
Rack mount cases are typically built to the sky because when space is at a premium horizontally, vertically is the way to go. It can seem like choosing the tallest possible rack mount case is the best idea, but there are some things you should keep in mind throughout the purchasing process. First things first, rack mount cases are labeled with U numbers. A U number or rack unit number is equal to 1 ¾ inches. So, a 10 U rack mount case gives you 17 ½ inches of height vertically. Keep in mind that U numbers refer to the amount of usable vertical space on the inside of the case, so the outside will be larger than a mere 17 ½ inches.
Height and Weight
As your rack mount case increases in height, it will become less and less stable and more likely to tip over. If you are moving stacks of servers, that won’t necessarily be an issue, as they will be snugly next to other things. However, if you are purchasing a rack mount case that is frequently moved around backstage at a theater, you don’t want something that could possibly be toppled.
Another thing to keep in mind when purchasing tall rack mount cases is that they can be incredibly heavy as they get bigger and taller. A 15 U case can easily weigh over a whopping 80 lbs. before anything is ever inside of it, so if you are looking for a case to travel with, something weighing over 150 lbs. might not be the best idea.
