Musicians often need to travel for work ,so flying with an instrument in a custom case often becomes second nature to them after years. However, travel always presents its challenges and problems, and making the journey with large and precious cargo can sometimes complicate things and create a host of issues. Here are some tips for traveling by plane with an instrument in an appropriate custom case.
Carry On A Small Instrument
If you are hauling a tuba or entire drum set, carrying it on will not be possible. However, there are a number of smaller instruments which may just comply with your airline’s regulations. If you aren’t sure, always ask. In fact, in 2012, a law was passed that US airlines must allow musicians to carry on any instrument without an extra fee, as long as it fits in the overhead bins or under the seats.
Be Early
The old entertainment industry adage goes “Early is on time, on time is late, and late is fired.” Similarly, if you wait too long to get to your gate, there might not be enough room left for your instrument on the plane, even if it is carry on approved.
Know Your Airline’s Boarding Policy Ahead of Time
Some airlines are first come, first serve when it comes to carry on. In this case, it is best to get there as early as possible. However, some airlines board by section, asking certain rows to board the plane first. This means that regardless of how early you get in line, if your section is last to board there may be no room for your instrument. In this case, get a seat that will board early to ensure there will be room for your instrument in its custom case.
You Might Have To Buy Your Instrument Its Own Seat
If your instrument is too large to fit beneath the seats or in the overhead compartments, you have to simply buy it a seat next to you ahead of time. Large instruments can travel this way if they meet certain criteria. If they are in a hard case and weigh less than 165 pounds they are good to go.
