On this day 70 years ago, a date “which will live in infamy,” 2,390 Americans lost their lives (another 1,282 wounded) when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, an attack that would push America into World War II. The surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor began at 7:55am Hawaiian time (12:55am ET).
353 Japanese fighters, bombers and torpedo planes swarmed the naval base in two waves, damaging all eight U.S. Navy battleships and sinking four. The attack also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer, while destroying 188 U.S. aircraft.
The following day, 8 December 1941, the United States officially declared war on Japan. Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S., which was reciprocated by the U.S. the same day.
Thus the United States entered the Second World War.
President Barack Obama hailed veterans of the bombing in a statement proclaiming today, December 7, “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.”
“Their tenacity helped define the Greatest Generation and their valor fortified all who served during World War II. As a nation, we look to December 7, 1941, to draw strength from the example set by these patriots and to honor all who have sacrificed for our freedoms,” he said.
So in light of today’s anniversary, we at Package Strategies Incorporated would like to thank each and every enlisted man and woman for their dedicated service.
