This Tuesday our nation will be celebrating Veterans Day. Every year on November 11th, businesses and civilians alike take the time to say thanks to the many men and women that make up our United States Armed Forces. Whether they have just returned from serving in Iraq, or they still remember the days of World War II, our veterans deserve recognition and appreciation for what they have accomplished for our country.
Veterans Day originated in 1918 and was first known as Armistice Day. This is because in the eleventh month, on the eleventh day, at the eleventh hour during World War 1, Germany declared a “cessation of hostilities”. Several months later, the Treaty of Versailles was signed to end the war. Although this was signed on June 28th, the nation considered November 11th to be the true end of World War I. In 1921, an American soldier that was unidentified was buried at the Arlington National Cemetery, leading the nation to continue the tradition of celebrating Armistice Day. In 1938, an act was passed to declare November 11th as a federal holiday. As time passed and the United States engaged in World War II and the Korean War, the idea of Armistice Day began to change to include not just the First World War, but the battles that had been fought following. Because of this, President Eisenhower signed a piece of legislation in 1954 to have Armistice Day changed to Veterans Day.
